Health is a basic human right and need. The September 2021 Technical Assistance Question of the Month (TAQ) shares select highlights from a newly released paper on health equity co-authored by staff at the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence and National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

The rape and sexual violence laws of the 43 jurisdictions from 35 countries reviewed for this report deny access to justice for many survivors of sexual violence as they provide a number of opportunities for perpetrators to escape justice. This impunity contributes to the continued perpetuation of sexual violence.

#1Thing you can do to center health equity and racial justice in your work is to learn from, partner with, and amplify the work of these Black-led organizations. This list (organized in alphabetical order) is not exhaustive, but it is a starting point.

This paper makes connections between health equity and our work to prevent sexual and intimate partner violence. This joint study from PolicyLink and the Bridgespan Group analyzes the state of funding for racial equity work. Among a host of important findings, the report highlights the necessity of accountability with rigorous and transparent reporting and the need for funders to trust and defer to the articulated needs of movement leaders.

Lesbian, gay, bi, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) people experience domestic violence at the same or higher rates than heterosexual cisgender people. This research report shares common stories and experiences of over 574 LGBTQ survivors at non-LGBTQ and LGBTQ-specific organizations.
